The rapeseed harvest has begun. On Monday this week we finished our barley and started on the rape. After a hard year for rape to grow with a very dry period in September/ October last year our yields will be down but a quality will remain.

The farm was going flat with the lads on the farm still cutting at 2.30am before the rain stopped them. Today has grounded to a standstill due to the weather but with another 170ha left to cut we should be through it in a few days.

As soon as the crop is cut and cleared the cultivations start. This is to create a good seed bed for next years crop and also to help keep moisture in the soil that will help next years crop establish.

This is a critical time of year for farming and if the weather stays good it will all be over in a flash.
